Defender Arcade Game is a two-dimensional, side-scrolling shooting game set on the surface of a fictional planet; players must defeat waves of invading aliens while simultaneously protecting astronauts from progressing to the next level. Failing to protect the astronauts causes the earth to explode and the degree to become populated with mutants. If players survive the waves of mutants, the planet is restored. Players have three lives, life being lost if the player’s ship comes into contact with an enemy or its projectiles. After exhausting all lives, the game ends.

Defender Arcade Game was regarded as one of the most challenging video games to defeat.
